Austria and Cuba dominating Langkawi tournament
While the rest of the world celebrated the Easter holidays this past weekend – it was business as usual for the FIVB World Tour as the one star Malaysia Open took place in Langkawi from 15-16 April.
This was the FIVB’s Malaysian debut, the Open marked the first time a world tour event was held in the country and it did not disappoint.
The tournament was two days of non-stop action with European teams dominating the podium, more specifically, it was an Austrian affair with two of the top four women’s teams, namely Rimser/Plesiutschnig and Strauss N./Strauss T. coming in third and fourth place respectively. In the end, America reigned supreme with ladies Kimberly Dicello the Emily Stockman beating Czech’s Bonnerova/Nakladalova to scoop gold.
The Austrian men managed bag silver – beating Estonians Tisaar/Nolvak and Croatians Kolaric/Klasnic who also took third and fourth place respectively, but gold was claimed by Cuban team Nivaldo/Gonzalez.
All in all, not a bad weekend for beach volleyball.
