World’s best confirmed for World Championships
Reigning Olympic and world champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt are one of four Brazilian men’s teams confirmed in the main draw of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, presented by A1.
The main draw, which was released on Wednesday, contains the top 23 men’s teams who have earned the most points on the World Tour – plus two teams from host nation Austria.
American legends Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena head the list with 4,040 entry points, followed by Latvians Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs.
Alison/Bruno, who are aiming to become the first men’s team to make it back-to-back world titles following their win in the Netherlands in 2015, are joined by three other teams in the hat for the main draw: Alvaro Filho/Saymon, Evandro/Andre and Pedro Solberg/Guto.
Dalhausser, who won the World Championship gold in 2007 with Todd Rogers in Gstaad, and partner Lucena also have three American teams for company in the main draw in the shape of Brunner/Patterson, Gibb/Taylor Crabb and Doherty/Hyden.
Alison/Bruno and Dalhausser are not the only previous World Champions in the main draw, as 2013 heroes Brouwer/Meeuwsen – who won 2016 Olympic bronze – are also in the main draw.
The Austrian beach fans, renowned for their love for beach volleyball, will be cheering on experienced duo Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst and Christoph Dressler and Thomas Kunert at the Danube Island.
The list of the remaining teams in the tournament, including the wildcards, will follow in due course later this week.
