Insider Tips: Best places to swim in Vienna

Jump right in!

Vienna’s the place to be this summer with the FIVB World Beach Volleyball Championships, presented by A1, taking place on the Danube Island. What with all the spectating, whooping, cheering that comes from with a huge crowd, we thought it would be awesome to have a list of places in and around Vienna where you could swim on those sweltering hot July days. Well, what do you know – here’s a list of just that – places in and around Vienna where you can swim on those sweltering hot July days.

Even though you’re probably thinking – “Austria is inland – where oh where can I possibly swim?” - well, as one of our esteemed (term used very loosely here) colleagues always says, these places are ‘lush’.

1. Krapfenwaldlbad

With a panoramic view of Vienna’s skyline and offering you the chance to be so high up, you can literally touch the sky, Krapfenwaldlbad is one of the best locations to swim in Vienna.

Located on Cobenzl, which is also home to some of the best Viennese vineyards and famous for an abundance of little eateries (known locally as Heurigers) where locals serve specialities with wine straight from the barrel (just joking, bottles guys... bottles). When you swim in Krapfenwaldlbad, you’d be able to take this all in and take away some great memories along with it.

2. Amalienbad

Rainy day? No sun? No problem!

As far as indoor pools go, Amalienbad reigns supreme. Going there is like stepping back in time into the set of the Great Gatsby. The whole 1920s aesthetic it boasts makes you want to drive too fast, keep liquor in your boots and take a ship across the Atlantic. When you swim there you can almost imagine young ladies in sequinned dresses smoking long cigarettes or hear the raspy voice of a blues club singer; can-canning would just be the cherry on top. It is truly exquisite. If you have a moment to relax and take it easy, go swim in this once-in-a-lifetime-experience pool.

3. Wienerberg Pond

The most liveable city in the world gives swimmers their pick of awesome spots to swim in. Wienerberg Pond is just one of those places. If you can, you need to do your backstroke here. It’s nature, but not two-hour-drive-away-nature… it’s nature in the city. This little local secret is a gem in summer, secluded, green and the water’s always warm. If you’re looking to escape in to the wild, but you’re not that invested because a day trip would suit you fine, then this is the place for you. Nestled in a natural alcove (made up entirely of trees), it’s like stepping into an oasis. Plus, if you’ve never swam in a lake, then what are you waiting for?

4. Alte Donau

For English-speakers, this translates to the ‘old Danube’. If swimming in the longest river in Western Europe is on your bucket list, then you’d better get your swimming gear on and belly flop into this bad boy.  It’s also a great spot to people-watch and tan - basically, there’s something for everyone. You could even end up on a boat. Just don’t forget your sunscreen.

5. Schönnbrunnerbad

Fancy cooling off at a palace where real emperors and empresses lived? You know you’re meant for that champagne life. Marie Antoinette’s parent’s house, guys. Take your wayfarers and your swag and set your towel down on royal lawns - *singing* “Let me be your ruler, you can call me Queen B.”

Time to tan until I reach the standard skin colour. 🌝

6. The Danube Island

Is there a better place to swim? The best part about swimming at the Danube Island is that you’ll be there already… whilst attending the World Championships, naturally. You don’t even have to venture far and if you’re one of those people (like most of us are), that’s put off by something or going somewhere the minute you have to take two modes of transport, then this is the spot for you. Perhaps you’ll even run into some beach volleyball Olympians diving in after a full day of matches. May the water be with you?
