German pool party at #WorldChampsVienna
Olympic champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst will face competition from two teams from Germany in the pool play at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1 in Vienna.
The World Championships are the one title that Ludwig and Walkenhorst have yet to win, and to add this particular piece of silverware to their collection they must first overcome fellow Germans Karla Borger and Maggie Kozuch and Nadja Glenzke and Julia Groβner in Pool D. The pool is completed by Moroccans Mahassine Siad and Imane Zeroual.
The drawing of lots also pitted three-time World Champion Kerri Walsh Jennings and her new partner Nicole Branagh against top seeded women Brazilians Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes.
In the men’s draw, Olympic champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt aim to make history by becoming the first men’s team to retain the World Championship title in Vienna. The Brazilian duo’s first assignment are three games in Pool E alongside Esteban and Marco Grimalt of Chile, Martins Plavins and Haralds Rega of Latvia and Aldevino Nguvo and Justino Tovela of Mozambique.
The World Championships kicks off on July 28 and runs until August 6 at Vienna’s Danube Island where the world’s best players will play in front of fans at a 10,000-capacity Center Court.
