Teams warm-up for this week with podium finishes in Poland
Brazilian stars Larissa/Talita and Germany’s Böckermann/Flüggen will head into the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1 full of confidence having taken gold at the four-star event at Olsztyn at the weekend.
Both teams saw off strong competition to top the podium and pick up the first place prize at the Crooked Lake.
Larissa and Talita, who are top seeds in Vienna as they chase a first world title together as a team, beat Canada’s in-form pair Pavan/Humana-Paredes in the gold medal match. The Brazilians bounced back from losing the first set to win 20-22, 21-18, 16-14.
For the North Americans it was their third successive podium finish after gold in Poreč and bronze in Gstaad, while reigning world champ Agatha and new partner Duda secured bronze.
In the men’s competition, Germans Böckermann/Flüggen ended a run of disappointing results by storming to their first gold medal together since February 2016. The duo put the frustration of losing in the qualification stage in Gstaad right behind them to take the first prize, beating Americans Doherty/Hyden in the final. Just like Larissa/Talita, the Germans had to battle back from losing the first set to take gold, winning 15-21, 21-18, 15-11.
In the bronze medal match, Mexicans Ontiveros/Virgen saw off the challenge of Latvia’s Plavins/Regza.
All six teams that celebrated on the podium are in action at the World Championships in Vienna, which kicks off this week. Click here for the full court schedule to see when your favorite team is playing.
