The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1 finally gets under way – and what a first day we’ve got in store on Friday.

Olympic champs, local heroes and reigning World Champions are all in action across the three courts.

It total 28 matches take center stage, but we’ve gone through them all and selected the top five you shouldn’t miss!

Who? Evandro/Andre v Varenhorst/Van Garderen
When? 12 noon
Where? Red Bull Beach Arena
Why? It’s the first match on the Red Bull Arena – so why else? But these Brazilians, a new team for 2017, are an exciting proposition and take on a new tandem from Holland in the center court’s first match of the tournament. Varenhorst won silver at the world champs two years ago and teams up with Van Garderen who is more accustomed to playing the indoor game – can he step up on the sand?

Who? Ludwig/Walkenhorst v Mahassine/Zeroual
When? 3pm
Where? Side court 3
Why? The German Olympic champions begin their title tilt against Moroccans on side court 3. Ludwig/Walkenhorst have had an injury-hit season so far, so could the African outsiders cause a big shock on the opening day of the competition? They have nothing to lose and will be dangerous opponents so this really is a must game to check out.

Who? Fendrick/A. Ross v Wang/Xue
When? 5pm
Where? Red Bull Beach Arena
Why? The main court will be treated to a fascinating tussle between two teams containing former world champions. April Ross won gold in 2009 with Jennifer Kessy but in Vienna, she is eyeing glory with Lauren Fendrick. Chen Xue lifted the trophy in 2013 but can this Chinese team go all the way again? A win here would be the perfect start.

Who? Barbara/Fernanda v Elize Maia/Taiana Lima
When? 6pm
Where? Side court 2
Why? An all-Brazilian clash between two experienced teams, including a reigning champ, cannot be missed. Barbara clinched gold two years ago with Agatha but is now teammates with Fernanda and the duo will be aiming to get their tournament off to the perfect start against their compatriots.

Who? Herrera/Gavira v Ermacora/Pristauz
When? 7pm
Where? Red Bull Beach Arena
Why? The young Austrians will have the huge backing of the home crowd in what looks on paper their toughest match in the pool. Experienced Spaniards Herrera/Gavira are one of the most consistent teams on the World Tour so this promises to be a tense and exciting match – the perfect way to wrap up a busy first day on the Danube Island.
