Home stars can’t wait to get out on the sand at #WorldChampsVienna
Austrian pair Katrina Schützenhöfer and Steffi Schwaiger’s message ahead of the start of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1 is: keep us on the Red Bull Beach Arena!
The duo already have experience of playing on the world stage, but in their home country this summer the tournament takes on extra special significance.
And with a packed Red Bull Beach Arena lying in wait for the pair in their first world champs together as a team, Austria’s top-seeded women’s team want to keep their feet on the center court sand.
“It’s difficult because when you’re on the main court you feel the music and the beat and yes you’re nervous a bit but it’s an amazing feeling,” Schwaiger told us ahead of their opening match against Thailand’s Radarong/Udomchavee at 3pm CET on the first day of the tournament.
“You look around and you say to yourself ‘oh my god’ when you see so many fans but when the game starts you need to focus and that’s the most important.”
“I prefer playing on the Center Court!” added Katrina. “I’m looking forward to playing on the court and as it’s my second world champs and it’s at home I’m a little nervous.
“We hope that we can get out of the pool –we’ll see how we go.”
Schwaiger and Schützenhöfer face Russians Birlova/Makroguzova and Czech pair Kolocova/Kvapilova in Pool L.
“It’s an okay pool,” said Schwaiger. “Anything is possible for all the teams. If we play well we can beat all of the teams but if we don’t we can easily lose them. The crowd will be a good motivation for us and we can’t wait to get out on the court and be a part of it.”
Steffi and Katrina’s game against the Thai pair begins on the Red Bull Beach Arena at 3pm CET – and you can watch it live on BeachStream.
