Copacabana heroes get their opening #WorldChampsVienna win
Reigning Olympic champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst are hoping they can make up for lost time as they eye World Championships glory on the Danube Island.
The German duo made light work of Morocco’s Mahassine/Zeroual winning in 21-10, 21-12 in 28 minutes to get their FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1 off to a winning start.
And having been denied game-time together this season due to injury, the pair are aiming to hit the sand running in Vienna as they eye their first world title.
“You can’t compare it to last year because the injuries we had this year were serious,” explained Ludwig. “The most difficult thing for us as players was having to sit back and be patient – that’s the worst for a player – not playing.
“But we like a challenge, this year is different to 12 months ago and we will take it like this. We will get into the rhythm as the tournament goes on and the important thing for us is to just focus.”
Kira added: “Of course we’ve not had the best pre-season preparation having not played so much together.
“It’s been hard but we’ve practiced a lot over the last three weeks and we will need a lot of matches to find our rhythm.
“Last year it was incredible but all we need to do is work hard and hope we can come out better here.”
