Lynn Simmons #WorldChampsVienna story
Lynn Simmons’ story is one that we can all relate to – well the sport fan in each of us. When you meet her it’s hard not to get drawn in by her welcoming, friendly nature. She is one of the first to get in in the morning and one of the last to leave. You can find her behind her laptop. She is working. She works behind-the-scenes. She works to make sure that everything runs smoothly. That’s Lynn and this is her #WorldChampsVienna story…
In 1973 she was setup on a blind date with whom would later become the love of her life, her partner in crime, her best friend - Tim Simmons. She giggled as she told us they “rode at the back of a dump truck on their very first date”. This past June was their 44th wedding anniversary – which they celebrated in Rome at a restaurant overlooking the city.
Her husband is well-known in beach volleyball circles, his alias is ‘beach-a-pedia’. Tim Simmons has always worked in sports and Lynn has always been by his side. Of course it takes some sacrifice to make it possible. But they don’t see it as work, they see it as a way of life.
An educator by trade, she worked teaching primary school learners as well as staff development for 30 years before retiring. But sports has always been and still is an integral part of her life, “that was my weekends, Rodeo, Car Racing and Beach Volleyball”.
It takes a lot to live away from home for more than two months a year, the pair haven’t celebrated a Christmas at home in 12 years, but the experience gathered during that time, during those years abroad has been immeasurable. When asked if she missed home, she responded “my home is with me.” (Smiling meaning Tim)
What makes Lynn so special is not her job or designation (which are also an integral part) but rather her person and her character. She is one of those people who sees similarities in people instead of differences. She looks for what brings people together instead of what separates them. She loves meeting people from different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities and sees a common thread joining all of us together.
