The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1 adventure for Cuba’s Lidianny Echevarria Benitez and Leila Martinez Ortega will continue after they recorded their first victory of the tournament early on Tuesday morning.

Day five of the championships was a good one for the Cubans as their winner-takes-all Pool B match against Columbian sisters Andrea and Claudia Galindo Rodriguez saw them triumph 21-16, 21-14.

The win secured Lidianny and Leila third spot in the pool and with it at least a lucky loser play-off match ahead of the knockout stages.

“We are very happy about this,” Lidianny said after the straight sets win on side court three. “Now we have to check who we will play and we want to get another win.

“It’s a well-organized tournament, there are very strong opponents and the best thing is we can learn from the best of the best. In every game from every team we can learn so much so we can grow as a team and as players.

“We are not nervous. We’re ready for the next matchup and the next challenge.”

The duo will find out who they will meet in either the lucky loser play-offs or the elimination around when the women’s draw takes place at 2.30pm CET later today.
