A stunning victory over America took them through to the last 32 - if only they had known it!
It was one of the biggest wins they had ever secured in their career, but not even Valentyna Davidova and Ievgeniia Shchypkova realised just what they had achieved in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1.
The Ukrainian pair not only shocked American fifth seeds Summer Ross and Brooke Sweat in a three-set thriller, but the win also took them right through to the knockout stages of the competition.
They had finished third in their pool but, with two wins from three in Pool E, they were able to avoid the lottery of the lucky loser round to take their place in the last 32.
If only they had known at the time what it meant for their time in Vienna.
“We are hopeful that we go into the next round,” they said. “We’re through already? Really? No lucky loser! Thank you!
“We finished number three in the pool but didn’t realize it put us through straight away.
“It is one of the best wins we have had. It was very hot and a very difficult match, we knew the game was going to be about who made the most mistakes.
“We hadn’t played at our best so far, but in this game, we blocked very well. Our defense was really good and we had a good serve, it was important for us.”
A Brazilian challenge now awaits with Elize Maia and Taiana Lima standing between the Ukrainians and a place in the last-16.
All the knockout matches, including Tuesday’s lucky loser matches, will be available live and free on BeachStream. Click here to sign-up!
