Suzanne Lowry’s #WorldChampsVienna story
Do you believe that there is one perfect person for everyone? That if you’re single, that somewhere out there – there’s one person who is the yin to your yang, the light to your dark, the rhyme to your poem and the ink to your pen. Suzanne Lowry has found her one in one billion and this is her #WorldChampsVienna story…
Suzanne is from the United States, she grew up in Greenville South Carolina and started playing indoor volleyball at the tender age of 13. She loved the sport. She started officiating volleyball on and off, at first informally, until she realized she had a real knack for it and it became her part-time job whilst studying. In fact, that’s where she met Keith Murlless. Keith would become Suzanne’s future husband. He refereed her university indoor team where she was team captain.
With a degree in Business Administration and an M.B.A, it’s no wonder she worked as a high-powered Marketing Director. In the meantime she and Keith went on to get married - to different people…
She still lived an almost superhero double life for a time, working by day and refereeing by weekend.
In 2006, Suzanne went away on a girls’ weekend, they attended a beach volleyball event where none other than Keith was refereeing. At a social after, Suzanne and Keith naturally gravitated toward one another and spent the evening chatting and getting to know one another again as two single adults. Suzanne finally asked the question that had been on her mind for quite some time: “Did you ever wonder if we’d met at a different time and place, if we would’ve ended up together?”, and like out of a movie, Keith grabbed her face in both his hands, kissed her and answered “Absolutely”.
The two tied the knot on a Catamaran in the middle of the Caribbean surrounded by close friends and family.
Due to increasing work pressures, shorter deadlines, a company-wide restructures, the pressure to always be online and available for work as well as aging parents, Suzanne made the decision to leave her job as a Marketing Executive and turn her weekend hobby into her full-time career - working as an international volleyball referee. Today, Suzanne and Keith are one of the few, if not only, married pair of international volleyball referees.
Unfortunately the pair do not always get to work together on the same tournaments, but Suzanne feels “very lucky and blessed” to be one of the few people that has turned their hobby into their career.
Like Alex Prietzel, Giulia Sui, Lynn Simmons and Hernan Humana – Suzanne Lowry is of the Humans of Beach Volleyball. If you see her, on or off the court – be sure to say hi, ask her about herself. She’s a stunning human being.
