Dear Tom, thank you for the music… you will be missed
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Vienna 2017 presented by A1 has just finished and what an event!
Everyone who attended, attended for a purpose. Maybe the purpose was to become world champions, or perhaps the purpose was to be the first from your country to compete in an international beach volleyball competition. Your purpose could’ve also been to support a loved one, or just to support the sport in all its glory.
Even though we were all brought together for a variety of reasons, we’ve left with different feelings and emotions. And, if you’re Austrian, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1 has been even more significant and will definitely be held in a special place in your heart and memories.
All of that wouldn’t be possible without the men and women behind-the-scenes, who have been dedicated to the sport and its development in Austria over the last 20 years. Tom Bläumauer is one of those men. This is Tom’s #WorldChampsVienna story…
Let us paint the picture for you. Beach volleyball 20 years ago was not what it is today. Not anywhere near. Packed stadiums, jingles, music, DJs, side-events, beach parties, dancers, entertainment, live scoring, mascots, live streaming are all relatively new.
Young Tom Bläumauer started at the very first FIVB Grand Slam in Klagenfurt in 1997, modestly holding up a mic on a side court. A supervisor heard him, entertaining the crowd with his knowledge and know-how about the game and asked, ‘Why isn’t this guy on Center Court?’ The very next day, Tom was on the Center Court and he’s been there ever since.
He, alongside the rest of the entertainment team: MC Flo Rudig, DJ Tobi Rudig and DJ Stari have been the voices and the sound associated with beach volleyball in Austria – they kept people coming back again and again at one of the most famous five-star beach volleyball events held in Klagenfurt year after year. Tom was one of the people who first combined world class entertainment and music with the athleticism synonymous with beach volleyball… That’s the way ah ha ah ha, I like it - the famous song played after an awesome move was his brainchild. He brought it and its sass to the Center Court.
Tom’s beach volleyball resume is as impressive as the man himself. He was present at the Olympics in Athens in 2004 and in Beijing four years later as a commentator. He has worked alongside the beach volleyball elite for over two decades – making friends along the way. He developed a reputation for high standards and professionalism – attributes that are also shown in his role as sports director with the Beach Majors Company.
“I’ve worked with many, many Sport Directors all over the world and I can say Tom is one of the finest I’ve had the pleasure of working with,” said Ed Drakich, the FIVB Supervisor and former Canadian player.
What sets Tom apart from other Sports Directors is his degree of commitment and dedication. A self-proclaimed perfectionist, known affectionately by colleagues as a ‘monk’, Tom makes sure every detail has been thought through. As they say, the devil is in the details…
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1 is Tom’s last event with the Beach Majors team. It’s with a heavy heart that he leaves behind an event that he helped to build up to what it is today.
So Tom, thank you for your contribution to Austrian beach volleyball and Beach Majors AND most importantly, thank you for the music.
