Business as usual on Red Bull Beach Arena for top seeds
Going back to basics may sound a simple way to book your FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1 quarterfinal spot, but for Larissa Maestrini and Talita Antunes, they knew it was exactly what they had to do.
The Brazilians have a large target on their backs as top seeds, but so far they seem to be handling the pressure, perfectly demonstrated in their latest victory over Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré.
The energy-sapping heat once again proved to be no bother, defeating the Swiss pair 21-19, 21-16 in a clinical display – with Talita praising their ability to do the easy things well on the Red Bull Beach Arena.
“For us as Brazilians, the heat is not the worst and we are able to play well, we served well and put in a good performance,” she said.
“It’s a long tournament and you can get tired very quickly, we are playing well in this weather and we want to be able to keep that going. We are not playing perfect volleyball but we are doing well.
“Our lack of mistakes made a bit difference, at the start we knew that we had to get the pass right, that gets the set right and we are able to get the power we need to win points.
“We tried to do the easy things really well, not missing the serves and making sure that we were the best we could.”
An all-Brazilian affair is next up for the tournament favorites, with Carolina Salgado and Maria Antonelli waiting in the wings and bidding for a place in the semi-finals.
It was the end of the road for Switzerland however, bowing out in the round of 16 after not quite hitting their potential against the top seeds.
Nevertheless, there were plenty of good moments for Heidrich and Verge-Depre to reflect on as they matched their best-ever 17th place finishes.
“There were a few too many mistakes, you have to take your energy to every ball but we didn’t do things good enough against this team,” said Heidrich.
“We knew it was going to be very tough, they are a very strong opponent and have been for quite a long time.
“We started really well but we didn’t do well enough on important points, it was going the wrong way but we are quite happy with what we have done already.
“We did well in a tough group, and then had another tough game just to get through, but when it comes to getting into the top eight we know it is always going to be difficult.”
