German duo complete the set to take the title on the Danube Island
Olympic champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst stormed to FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship gold with a stunning comeback against Americans April Ross and Lauren Fendrick.
Their win, during an injury-hit year, saw the Germans collect the missing piece in beach volleyball silverware after picking up gold at last summer’s Olympics, Swatch World Tour Finals and European Championships.
The pair were simply too good in the final two sets for the 35-year-old American team, who took a tight first set 21-19.
Hurt by losing the opener, Ludwig and Walkenhorst battled back to level the score with an impressive mix of defense and attack. With Ross and Fendrick unable to get a foothold in the set, the Germans took full advantage to win it 21-13.
The deciding set was tip and tuck early on before Laura and Kira turned the screw. With Ludwig saving ball after ball deep on the court and Walkenhorst bossing things at the net, the Germans eased into the lead – one which they would not relinquish. The title was theirs, winning 15-9 in the final set.
Full reaction to follow.
