Laura and Kira react to Vienna gold
Victorious world champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst could still not believe they had gold hanging around their necks.
The Germans were in sensational form to turn around a one-set deficit to blitz American opponents Lauren Fendrick and 2009 champion April Ross in the last two sets to take the crowd that has so far eluded them.
“It’s unbelievable, I still can’t realize what we’ve achieved in the last 10 days” said Olympic champ Walkenhorst afterwards. “We have not had an easy preparation – we’ve had some issues but we’ve always believed in ourselves.
“We knew if we could focus on our home game and play how we want to that we have enough between us on court to come back and play with confidence. That confidence just rose with every game. I just can’t believe it.”
Having lost the first set it looked as though the American 14th seeds were going to cause a massive upset.
Laura did her best to describe her feeling at the time - one we sadly can’t print – but she admitted that the game was a tough one.
“It was definitely a tight game,” said the 31-year-old. “It was back and forth in the first set and I think we were holding back a bit – they’ve been playing well on the tour but we knew we could touch every ball and serve well.
“However in the first set we didn’t not serve how we’d like and we said to each other we needed to step it up and that’s what we did.
“We were better after that and it goes without saying this is an amazing achievement for us.”
